The police can't be everywhere at once. When seconds count, the police are only minutes away. Law enforcement typically gets notified either after a crime is already underway or (sadly) after violent criminals have already finished with their victims and have left the scene. In the end, you are personally responsible for your own safety - and the safety of those you love. To borrow a Boy Scout phrase - "Be Prepared."
